Executive Functioning In Times of COVID-19

A 5-Week Virtual Parenting Workshop on Wednesday Evenings

Certainly during times of COVID there have been significant changes to the academic environment and with that I have had many parents expressing concern about their child's increased or newfound executive functioning weaknesses. Within this workshop I will provide parents with practical strategies to address executive weaknesses as they manifest within the home as well as within the educational setting (whether it be in the school environment or during remote learning). The workshop will be interactive such that parents will have the opportunity to try different strategies between sessions and receive feedback on how to modify strategies from week to week as is most helpful for their child.

The workshop will be divided into two groups based on child grade:

*Group 1 is for parents of kids grades K-5 and will run Wednesdays from 7:30-8:30pm.

*Group 2 is for parents of kids grades 6-12 and will run Wednesdays from 8:30-9:30pm.

Dates: 01/27, 02/03, 02/10, 02/17, and 02/24

So You Were Diagnosed With Epilepsy?!

A discussion with neuropsychologists to help you understand the epilepsy diagnosis so that you can continue to live a fulfilling life.

Target audience: Patients, caregivers and parents (All are welcome. Content will be most relevant to individuals diagnosed with epilepsy in the past year)
Format: Informational presentation followed by Q&A
Presenters: Dr. Nuri Erkut Kucukboyaci & Dr. Lindsay Plunkett
Date: Thursday, January 28th

Time: 2:00-3:30pm

Format: ONLINE   (you will receive a link on January 21, 2021)

Email Dr. Plunkett to reserve your spot: lindsayplunkettphd@gmail.com

Introduction to the session: Our interactive information session is geared towards adults and children who were recently diagnosed with epilepsy. For many, the diagnosis of epilepsy is a life changing moment and needs its own moment for emotional processing and clarification. For some, the diagnosis marks the end of an exhausting diagnostic phase, and leaves them pondering "now what?" For others, it marks the beginning of a new phase with multiple treatment options, all requiring more information to make a decision one feels comfortable with. This presentation will help newly diagnosed individuals and their caregivers understand what their diagnosis entails, what it means in terms of their daily functioning (including cognitive, emotional, and academic functioning), what treatment options might be discussed in the year forward and where to find the different kinds of help they might need along their journey. It will also discuss health behaviors that can make a big difference in the longer term for patients and caregivers. A warm welcome will also be provided by "seasoned" peers who have built a thorough understanding of the healthcare system surrounding epilepsy over the years and who have successfully transitioned to a more "proactive" management of their symptoms to achieve a higher quality of life.

*Dr. Nuri Erkut Kucukboyaci is a NY-state licensed psychologist, with post-graduate training in cognition and epilepsy. Until the fall of 2020, he served as a fellow and associate scientist at the Kessler Foundation and an Assistant Professor (volunteer) at the Dept. of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Rutgers University New Jersey Medical School. He currently splits his time between his private practice and cognitive research, and provides psychodiagnostic evaluations, consultations, behavioral and cognitive treatments to adult patients. (drnurierkut@gmail.com )

*Dr. Lindsay Plunkett is also a NY-state licensed psychologist who has advanced training in epilepsy, including a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center in the Department of Neurology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). Upon completion of her fellowship, she served as the Assistant Professor of Neuropsychology in the Division of Child Neurology at CUIMC. She now dedicates her time to her private practice in Glen Head, NY where she provides neuropsychological evaluation, consultation, and executive functioning coaching/behavioral therapy to pediatric patients. (lindsayplunkettphd@gmail.com )

Drs Plunkett and Kucukboyaci interned together at NYU Langone Hospital's Rusk Rehabilitation Center, where they completed their advanced training on the diagnosis and rehabilitative treatments of various cognitive disorders that result from acquired brain injury and neurological disease.
